HortusFox supports the OpenSource Volunteering Petition

Opensource work is not officially recognized as volunteering work in germany. This is baffling, as any software system that you can find everywhere relies on open-source projects. While there are different works recognized as doing good to societal communities, open-source is not one of them. Still, there are many people, organisations and projects that maintain open-source projects in their free time. For free, with no financial compensation or, even worse, official recognition by the german government. And these projects are the base foundation for crucial software systems across the world. If opensource breaks, the entire IT breaks as well. This needs to change! Because all modern infrastructure depends on open-source software! Open-source work is work, and there definitely must be a change happening, so open-source work is officially recognized as volunteering. Fortunately, there is a petition run by Boris Hinzer, that pursues a change. Me and my partner already signed the petition as private individuals. ehrenamt opensource HortusFox now supports the petition! You can see that from the official HortusFox homepage. Why does HortusFox officially support the cause? Because we know
  • that open-source work needs to be officially acknowledged
  • that open-source work is equally important to other volunteering work
  • The entire software ecosystem relies on free work / projects
  • Developers without a job could finally be officially recognized

Please, if you haven't already signed the petition, consider doing it. It will help everyone involved! Thank you for reading!
